Carbon vs Aluminum Arrows

If you shoot indoors on a recurve, or you're new to outdoor archery and want shafts that are simple to keep consistent, aluminum is usually the easier material to start with. If you shoot outdoors, have some experience, and want more speed for the same draw weight, carbon is usually the better fit — or a carbon-aluminum hybrid if you want a bit of both.

Neither material is universally better. In my opinion, whichever arrow you can tune and shoot straight is the right one for you — everything below is about trade-offs, not a single winner.

What's the Real Difference Between Carbon and Aluminum Arrows?

An aluminum shaft is a single drawn metal tube. A carbon shaft is built from thousands of resin-bonded fibers, wound and cured into a tube — the same family of materials used in aviation and cycling, adapted to archery over the last few decades. That construction difference is why the two behave so differently when bent, struck or flexed after release. How Durable Are Carbon Arrows?

Carbon fiber is stronger than steel for its weight and doesn't lose its shape after flexing, which is one reason it's a favorite among experienced and professional archers. It's also more durable than any other common shafting material against ordinary use.

The catch is damage from a hard hit. Because a carbon shaft is made of thousands of small fibers, it can crack internally without any visible sign. The general advice on the forums is to flex the shaft gently and listen — a small grinding or cracking sound means the fibers are compromised and the arrow should be retired, even if it looks fine.

Most carbon manufacturers hold straightness tolerances around ±0.001 inch, which is far tighter than the roughly ±0.003 inch usually recommended as a minimum. Weight and spine tolerances are similarly tight. Since carbon is a comparatively newer material for archery, it also comes in a narrower range of sizes than aluminum.

How Durable Are Aluminum Arrows?

Aluminum shafts are just as straight and consistent as carbon out of the box, but they're more prone to bending. Shoot one into a foam target from 15 yards and you'll often see it wobble on impact — take the same shot with carbon and there's usually no visible wobble at all, because carbon is stiffer and recovers its line faster.

The wrinkle is that an aluminum shaft can lose straightness quietly, without an obvious bend you'd notice by eye, and even a small amount of bend can affect accuracy. A carbon shaft essentially doesn't have that failure mode — it holds its line or the fibers are damaged, with not much middle ground.

Archers who've shot aluminum for twenty or thirty years often say that switching to carbon shows little benefit beyond durability. Aluminum is easier to refletch, since hot-melt inserts and points hold well on a metal surface — carbon needs epoxy instead, because hot-melt doesn't bond to it properly. Aluminum also holds excellent spine consistency from shaft to shaft and year to year, without the small variation you can sometimes see between carbon shafts of the same brand and model.

Is Carbon or Aluminum Better for Penetration and Hunting?

If durability isn't your deciding factor, an animal doesn't care whether your shaft is carbon or aluminum. Penetration comes down to kinetic energy — arrow speed and total mass — and how well your bow is tuned matters at least as much as the shaft material itself.

What About Carbon-Aluminum Hybrid Arrows?

There's also a hybrid option that aims to take the best of both: an aluminum core for weight control, spine consistency and accuracy, wrapped in a thin carbon-fiber shell for added stiffness and strength. That combination makes for a notably light, fast shaft — Easton's FMJ line is the best-known example and has been used by professional archers for years. Hybrid shafts sit at the top of the material lineup, since they combine both manufacturing processes.

Remember the short version: the arrow you can tune and shoot straight is the right answer for you, whichever material it's made from.
