Carbon is the lightest and most widely used option for hunting and target work today. Aluminum is a consistent, well-established material that's easy to start with. Fiberglass runs heavier and more forgiving, which suits low-poundage recurve bows. Wood is for traditional archers who want the older feel and don't mind the extra upkeep.

Before you look at a specific product, figure out what you're actually shooting for — target practice, big game, small game, or just getting started — and what poundage bow you're shooting it from. Why Is Carbon the Most Popular Arrow Material?

Carbon arrows are the most common type on the market today, largely because they're light for their stiffness and hold up well to repeated shooting. Many current carbon shafts claim straightness tolerances as tight as 0.005 inch, and manufacturing that kind of precision is part of why carbon shafts generally cost more per dozen than aluminum or fiberglass.

An uncut shaft listed at, say, 32 inches is measured this way — from the end of the insert to the end of the nock — which is why a shop still needs to cut it down to your specific draw length before you shoot it.

If you're buying arrows online rather than in person, check the seller's return policy before you order. Arrows aren't a personal-use item the way clothing or footwear is, so most sellers will accept a return within a set window if the arrows aren't right for you.

Below, I'll go through what stood out about each of these arrows by material, including a few genuine downsides — not just the selling points.

What Are the Best Carbon Arrows?

Carbon arrows are mainly used by hunters. They cost more than most other shaft materials, but the durability and weight savings are usually the trade-off being made.

Carbon Express Maxima Red

When you release an arrow, the bow transfers a large amount of energy into the shaft, and the shaft's job is to carry that energy through to the target without losing it to flex and wobble.

In most arrows, spine — how much the shaft resists bending — is the same from tip to tip. The Maxima Red is built differently: the red mid-section is deliberately less stiff than the rest of the shaft, while the black portion nearer the tip stays stiffer and flexes very little. That's meant to concentrate the bending in the red zone instead of letting it travel the whole length of the shaft, which keeps the arrow's trajectory more consistent.

A few things worth knowing before you buy:

  • This isn't the easiest first carbon arrow for a brand-new shooter — it rewards a bow that's already well tuned.
  • Straightness is checked by laser to a 0.005 inch tolerance.
  • The 350 spine option performs well out of 60–70 lb bows.
  • It's an uncut shaft at 32 inches, measured from the end of the insert to the end of the nock — a shop can cut it to your draw length.
  • These shafts are manufactured in Korea.
  • The Bull Dog nock is wider than the shaft, so it's less likely to damage a neighboring arrow already in the target — though it can still tear vanes on impact.

The shaft ships without vanes — you're buying the shaft, nock and insert only, not a fletched arrow. Given what you'll pay for it, this one makes the most sense once you're already an experienced hunter, rather than as a first carbon arrow.

Carbon Express Maxima Hunter

The Maxima Hunter is built for high-poundage compound bows and is one of the faster, more accurate options in the Carbon Express line.

  • Weight-forward design — the back of the shaft is lighter than the front, which is meant to help both accuracy and penetration.

Carbon Express holds tighter tolerances here than most of the other carbon arrows we looked at. One downside worth flagging: the timber camo pattern makes a missed arrow hard to spot once it's off the target.

Easton Full Metal Jacket

The FMJ pairs two materials: a carbon core for strength and light weight, wrapped in an XX75 aluminum alloy jacket that adds kinetic energy on impact. It's one of Easton's better-known designs (Easton Archery).

  • Delivers speed without giving up much accuracy.
  • Small diameter with a thicker carbon core under the aluminum jacket. A smaller diameter means less surface area, so the arrow meets less resistance on impact and penetrates more predictably — it's also less affected by crosswind than a larger-diameter shaft of the same weight and speed.
  • You get the carbon core's resilience along with the aluminum jacket's impact resistance and its ability to be straightened.
  • Low air friction along the shaft gives it strong penetration — one of the more capable arrows on the market by that measure.
  • Reported to perform well even in harsh conditions, including cold-weather hunts in Alaska.
  • Weight tolerance of 2 grains.

If you want something heavier than pure carbon but more durable than pure aluminum, the FMJ is worth a look — though the Maxima Red is worth the extra cost if durability against a hard hit matters more to you than weight.

A couple of things to watch for: some users report fletching breaking off, and you'll need to have these arrows cut to your draw length before shooting them.

Tiger Archery 30 Inch Carbon Arrow

These are aimed at beginner archers who want carbon arrows that cost less than the American-made options above. They're extremely sturdy for the category.

  • 30 inches long with a 0.3 inch diameter.
  • Rated at 500 spine, though usable with a 600-spine setup as well.
  • Built for extended durability.
  • Two black vanes and one white vane per arrow.
  • Suited to 40–60 lb bows.

They won't match the tighter tolerances of the more costly American-made carbon arrows above, but for practicing with family or getting new shooters into carbon, they hold up well and are worth what you'll pay for a dozen.

Two things worth flagging: this shaft isn't rated for 70 lb or heavier bows, and I wouldn't recommend it for hunting — it's better suited to target archery. Arrow tips can also get stuck and lost inside foam targets; gluing the metal inserts into the shafts can help, and adding extra glue to the fletching can reduce peel-off over time.

Aluminum is the most common arrow material overall. It's lightweight and generally costs less than carbon, without giving up much in the way of quality.

For what you'll pay, the XX75 is one of the stronger options in its category — but it comes with some real caveats.

  • Because it's aluminum, an arrow already in the target can get dented by the next arrow that lands near it.

  • Performs well out of 35–49 lb recurve bows.

  • Reported speed is better than you'd expect from fiberglass.

  • Fletching reportedly holds up through hundreds of shots.
  • Offered as a lower-cost way to load up a quiver compared with carbon or higher-end aluminum shafts.

Two caveats: it's not recommended for bows heavier than 55 lb, and the plastic nock is on the lower-quality side — it can come off easily after a shot.

Wood is the oldest and most basic arrow material. Traditional archers have shot wood shafts for thousands of years, and they're still a legitimate option today.

A few real caveats: the tips aren't interchangeable — they're a one-piece glued metal point, so replacing one usually means cutting the shaft and losing some length. These arrows arrive assembled but may need minor fixes like re-gluing feathers, since fletching can come loose. Nocks can also work loose over time; extra glue usually solves that. And because it's wood, the shaft can snap if it hits a tree or a wood target frame directly.
